Netatmo Smart video will not support HomeKit Secure Video

Despite previous commitments, Netatmo has confirmed that its smart video doorbell will not support HomeKit Secure Video because of hardware limitations.

The Netatmo smart video doorbell launched in September 2020 and Netatmo had promised that HomeKit Secure Video would arrive at a later date. But following internal and external testing, they have established support will not be possible.

Netatmo has gone into great detail about the reasons in this post. But in short, one of Apple’s main requirements for a video device to work with HKSV is the continuous encoding of video at 30 fps. The doorbell currently runs at 2fps and in order to adopt this technology, Netatmo would need to increase the video capture rate and encoding to 30 fps.

While Netatmo had proven this was possible in lab testing. It is only when they did field testing with its product ambassadors that they ran into issues with significant impact on power consumption and consequently on the internal temperature of the doorbell.

So despite Netatmo’s best efforts, the company has decided not to support HomeKit Secure Video technology on the Smart Video Doorbell.

This news will be disappointing to users that have bought the Doorbell with the hope HomeKit Secure Video would arrive in the future.
