Apple is once again reminding users that support for the legacy HomeKit architecture is coming to an end

Back in late 2022, Apple rolled out a new architecture for its Apple Home platform aimed at improving performance, reliability, and long term compatibility. The initial rollout was not without issues, however, with early bugs forcing Apple to temporarily pull the upgrade before later re releasing it in a more stable form.

Now, Apple is once again reminding users that support for the legacy HomeKit architecture is coming to an end, with the final cutoff set for February 10, 2026.

Years after first introducing the redesigned Home app foundation, Apple is reinforcing the need for users to upgrade if they want continued access to their smart home setup. The newer architecture was designed to make controlling accessories more efficient and reliable while laying the groundwork for future features across the Apple Home ecosystem.

At launch, the transition was optional and required manual approval from users. Apple allowed both systems to coexist for an extended period while it addressed early stability concerns. While most Apple Home users have already upgraded, a portion of households are still running the older system.

Apple originally planned to retire the legacy architecture in fall 2025, but that deadline was later pushed to February 10, 2026. According to reports from MacRumors, Apple has now begun emailing users again to reinforce that the February deadline remains in effect and to encourage them to update as soon as possible.

How to upgrade to the new Apple Home architecture

Apple says the upgrade process is simple and only takes a few minutes.

  • Open the Home app on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac
  • Tap or click the More button
  • Select Home Settings
  • Select Software Update
  • Tap or click Update Now and follow the on screen prompts

Apple also warns that all devices connected to an upgraded home must be running modern software versions. Any device using iOS 16.2, iPadOS 16.2, macOS 13.1, tvOS 16.2, watchOS 9.2, or later will continue to work normally. Devices running older versions will lose access until they are updated, including devices belonging to people you have invited to control your home.

The renewed push comes as Apple is widely expected to expand its smart home lineup this year. Rumours point to as many as five new home focused products launching in 2026, with the first announcements potentially arriving as early as March. This push also cleary signals Apple move away from the HomeKit name and firmly Apple Home

With that broader smart home push on the horizon, Apple is making it clear that upgrading to the new Apple Home architecture is no longer optional.
