The Aqara Wall Outlet H2 UK has officially launched, bringing a built-in smart wall socket to the UK market with dual protocol support awith Apple Home and Matter support.
Smart plugs have been common in UK smart homes for years, but they often come with compromises. Bulky adapters, blocked sockets, and designs that look out of place in modern interiors are all familiar frustrations. In-wall smart outlets have existed elsewhere, but they have been rare in the UK. The Wall Outlet H2 UK is designed to fill that gap by replacing a standard UK double socket entirely, delivering smart control without changing how a room looks.
One of the most notable aspects of the Wall Outlet H2 UK is its dual-protocol approach. During setup, users can choose between Thread or Zigbee, allowing the outlet to work either as a Matter accessory in Apple Home or as a more deeply integrated device within the Aqara ecosystem.
Familiar design with practical additions
Visually, the Wall Outlet H2 UK follows a clean, understated design. It uses a standard UK double-socket layout that blends naturally into both modern and traditional interiors.
Each socket has its own physical button with subtle LED status lighting. The buttons provide firm tactile feedback, making manual control reliable even when apps or networks are unavailable. The LEDs are visible without being distracting, particularly in darker rooms.
Some variants also include integrated USB-C ports. This allows devices to be charged without external power adapters, freeing up AC sockets and keeping installations tidy. In everyday spaces such as bedrooms, kitchens, or offices, this quickly becomes a practical quality-of-life upgrade.
Designed for Apple Home and Matter
When configured in Thread mode, the Wall Outlet H2 UK pairs directly with Matter platforms such as Apple Home. With a compatible Matter controller and Thread Border Router such as Apple TV 4K or HomePod mini, the outlet appears as a native Apple Home accessory.
Each AC socket is exposed individually in the Home app, allowing independent control, room assignment, and inclusion in scenes and automations. Siri voice control works on a per-socket basis, making it easy to power devices on or off using natural commands.
As a mains-powered Thread device, the outlet also functions as a Thread router. This allows it to strengthen the Thread mesh network, improving reliability and coverage for other Thread accessories throughout the home. For users building a Matter-first smart home, this makes the outlet more than just a power accessory. It becomes part of the home’s core infrastructure.
While Matter supports energy monitoring and this data is available in the Aqara app. Apple Home does not currently surface this data. As a result, energy usage from the outlet is not visible in the Home app, though this is a platform limitation rather than a device issue.
Zigbee option for deeper Aqara features
Alternatively, the Wall Outlet H2 UK can be paired using Zigbee through an Aqara hub. In this mode, the outlet unlocks additional features inside the Aqara Home app, including per-socket energy monitoring, configurable power limits, child lock options, button press customisation, and more detailed usage data.
The Zigbee setup also exposes the outlet to Apple Home via the Aqara hub, removing the need for separate pairing. The trade-off is philosophical rather than functional. Thread prioritises open Matter integration and mesh networking, while Zigbee offers finer control inside Aqara’s own platform.
