Apple’s long-rumoured smart home hub could finally be getting close to launch, and it may introduce an entirely new operating system designed specifically for the home.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is developing software that combines elements of tvOS, watchOS and iOS, with an interface featuring a grid of apps, widgets and customisable clock faces.
This isn’t a new idea. Reports that Apple was exploring a HomePod-style device with a display date back to 2021, while by 2022 and 2023 reports had become more specific about an iPad-like smart home display. So, in one form or another, Apple’s dedicated home display has now been rumoured for around five years.
The latest version is expected to combine a 6- to 7-inch square display with a HomePod-like speaker, creating a central controller for Apple Home.
One of the more interesting reported features is facial recognition. The hub could recognise which household member is looking at it and display personalised information. The interface may also adapt depending on how close you are, making elements larger when viewed from across the room and showing more detail as you approach.
The operating system could potentially be called homeOS, based on trademark activity that may be linked to Apple. Multi-user support is also expected.
Siri and Apple Intelligence are likely to sit at the centre of the experience, alongside Apple Home accessory controls, security cameras, FaceTime, photos, calendars and music. Apps including Calendar, Camera, Apple Music, Podcasts, News, Reminders and Notes are also reportedly planned.
After years of rumours, we might not have much longer to wait. Gurman says Apple could unveil the smart home hub as soon as October 2026.
