HomePod mini 14.4 update brings improvements to hand off with U1 chip

Hand off music visual, audible, and haptic effects from iPhone to HomePod mini

While both the original HomePod and the HomePod mini have supported audio handoff for some time. The mini features a U1 ultra-wideband chip that that should make it an easier for users of with an iPhone 12 or iPhone 11 device. The new update will enable the U1 chip to do the following.
  • Hand off music visual, audible, and haptic effects from iPhone to HomePod mini
  • Get personalized listening suggestions on iPhone when it is next to HomePod mini
  • Media controls automatically appear without having to unlock iPhone when it is close to HomePod mini

It is indeed encouraging that Apple has finally followed through with the promised U1 support. But I think this is just a start in how Apple could use the U1 Ultra-Wide band chip. Other applications such as utilising it within HomeKit for location tracking is a great use case for this.
