Apple has unveiled the second generation AirTag, keeping the same familiar design but upgrading what matters most: how easily you can actually find your stuff. The new model brings a longer locating range, improved Precision Finding, and a significantly louder speaker, all while continuing to lean on the Find My network for wide area tracking.
What AirTag is, and what it’s for
If you’ve never used one, AirTag is a small tracker you attach to everyday items such as keys, a backpack, or luggage. Once paired, you can see that item in the Find My app across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and on iCloud.com, making it easy to check where it was last seen, play a sound, or get guided right to it when it’s nearby.
Apple says AirTag has helped people recover everything from keys and bikes to lost luggage, including cases where tracking an item quickly made a real difference, such as finding luggage containing essential medication.
Same design, Longer range, powered by a new UWB chip
Externally, nothing changes. The AirTag keeps the same look, remains compatible with existing accessories, and Apple specifically notes continued support for items such as the FineWoven Key Ring, with the same design and colour options.
The biggest upgrade is inside. Apple has fitted the new AirTag with a second generation Ultra Wideband chip, enabling Precision Finding to work up to 50 percent farther away than the previous model. That means the on screen guidance and haptic feedback that leads you to your AirTag should kick in sooner, from further out, when you’re close enough for Precision Finding to take over.
Apple has also upgraded the Bluetooth hardware to improve overall detection range when you’re not using Precision Finding, helping you locate items more reliably at longer distances.
A much louder speaker, with a new chime
Apple has also reworked the internal design, and the result is simple: you’ll hear it more easily. The new AirTag has a 50 percent louder speaker, and Apple says it can be heard from up to twice as far as the previous generation, backed up by a distinctive new chime.
Apple Watch Precision Finding expands
Another key change is how you can find it. Apple says Precision Finding now extends to Apple Watch, specifically Apple Watch Series 9 and later, plus Apple Watch Ultra 2 and later.
The new AirTag requires an iPhone running an incoming iOS 26.2.1 update or later, and watchOS 26.2.1 is also coming, and is required to enable Precision Finding to the Apple Watch. It would seem that only the new AirTags support the precision finding featuring and not the 1st Generation.
Price and availability
The new AirTag is available now at the same price as the previous model: £29/$29 for a single AirTag and £99/$99 for a four pack, with free personalised engraving available via Apple store and the Apple Store app.
