Aliro smart lock NFC and UWB standard to launch in Q1 2026

The smart lock standard Aliro is finally launching. The first specification, which standardises NFC based tap to unlock and Ultra Wideband hands free unlocking, is expected to arrive Q1 2026, according to the Connectivity Standards Alliance.

Announced in 2023, Aliro is an open smart lock standard designed to ensure digital keys work consistently across phones, watches, and platforms, regardless of manufacturer. The CSA confirmed this week they have completed the Aliro 1.0 specification and certification programme sign off.

Developed on the same experience of Apple Home Key which allows users to unlock compatible doors by tapping an iPhone or Apple Watch using NFC. But with newer hardware support with Ultra Wideband enabling hands free unlocking as you approach.

With the launch of Aliro,  these same capabilities come to Android devices and other smart home platforms. This means households using a mix of iPhone, Galaxy, and Pixel devices will be able to unlock the same smart lock using their own phone or wearable.

The standard is the result of an industry wide collaboration between Apple, Google, and Samsung, alongside lock makers and chip manufacturers including Allegion, Assa Abloy, Qualcomm, and NXP. Lock brands planning Aliro support include Schlage, Level, and Nuki. With the first available being ULTRALOQ Bolt Mission UWB.

Aliro certified locks will support one or more unlocking methods depending on hardware support.

  • NFC enables tap to unlock using a phone or watch.
  • Bluetooth Low Energy allows proximity based unlocking initiated by the phone.
  • Bluetooth Low Energy combined with Ultra Wideband enables true hands free unlocking as you approach the door.

Because these features require specific radios and antennas, many existing smart locks will not be upgradeable to Aliro. But with CES 2026 happening right now, we should see the first of the smart locks announced with support for Aliro.
