Apple has officially added the original Apple TV 4K to its vintage products list, marking another milestone for a device that helped shape Apple’s home entertainment and smart home ecosystem.
First launched in September 2017, the first-generation Apple TV 4K introduced support for 4K resolution, HDR10 and Dolby Vision. Powered by the A10X Fusion chip, it represented a significant upgrade over its predecessor.
Under Apple’s classification, a product becomes vintage when it has been more than five but less than seven years since it was last distributed for sale. Vintage devices may still qualify for repairs, depending on parts availability.
What Does This Mean for Apple Home?
Beyond streaming, the original Apple TV 4K played an important role in Apple Home, acting as a home hub for remote accessory control and automations.
However, unlike newer models, it lacks Thread border router functionality, which has become increasingly important with the growth of Matter and Thread accessories.
Despite its age, the original Apple TV 4K remains a capable streaming device, and vintage status doesn’t mean it will suddenly stop working.
With Apple expected to introduce new smart home hardware, including a refreshed Apple TV, the timing is particularly interesting.
For Apple Home users, the Apple TV has always been much more than a streaming device. It’s a central part of the smart home, and the original Apple TV 4K helped establish that foundation.
