Apple could be preparing one of the biggest expansions of HomeKit since the smart home platform launched in 2014.
According to Bloomberg, Apple is developing a broader smart home ecosystem built around its new Siri AI, while also working with third-party manufacturers on new devices designed specifically for the platform.
At the centre of that could be a new operating system, possibly called homeOS. The software is reportedly being designed specifically for Apple’s upcoming HomePad, combining elements of iPadOS, watchOS and tvOS while putting Apple Home controls and Siri at the heart of the experience.
The new Siri will also play a major role. Built around large language models, it is designed to understand more natural requests and provide deeper control over apps and smart home devices, potentially making Apple Home much more conversational than it is today.
Apple is also reportedly working with third-party manufacturers on new devices designed for its Siri AI home platform, potentially expanding the types of products that work within Apple Home.
This will be supported by new hardware, including the rumoured HomePad alongside updated HomePod mini and Apple TV models.
Together, the new software, Siri AI, hardware and an expanded accessory ecosystem could represent one of the biggest changes to Apple Home and HomeKit since the platform launched.
