Nuki Home Solutions has unveiled its latest products, the Nuki Lock 3.0 and Nuki Lock 3.0 Pro. The two models are retrofit device for your door lock and works with Apple HomeKit.
While both models are pretty much identical in design, the Nuki 3.0 Pro comes in a black and white finish with a stainless steel finish for the knob. Then the Nuki 3.0 standard only comes in white and features a plastic knob. Additionally, the optional battery back that was released last year comes as standard with the Pro model. Whereas the standard model uses 4 x AA batteries.
On the inside, Nuki has said they have improved the internal gears and mechanisms to reduce the overall sound, but no mention of speed improvements. The 3.0 Pro model also gets an internal Wi-Fi module. This means that the smart lock will connect directly with Wi-Fi without the need of the Nuki module. But this will make no difference for HomeKit users as it does not need the module for HomeKit support. This is because the Nuki smart clock connects via Bluetooth to a Home Hub like the Apple TV 4 or later, HomePod, HomePod Mini.
Nuki has also removed the internal door sensor that worked in combination with a supplied magnet on the new models. But replaced it with their own contact sensor that connects directly to your lock using Bluetooth 5.0. This sensor only works with the company’s own locks and is extra, which bumps up the price.
No matter, Thread or Apple Key
The obvious elephant in the room is no mention of Thread, Matter or Apple Key. While its entirely possible that Nuki could add Thread and Matter support if the right communication radio is built in, Apple Key would be a hard retrofit. But the fact the company has not mentioned anything about any of these is a big miss for a new product as we approach 2022.
The price for the Nuki Lock 3.0 is €149/£129, with the 3.0 Pro is retailing for €249£215. The optional contact door sensor is €45£39 and all three should go on sale at the end of November.
